FLOWERS COVE lies on the west shore past Goat Island at the narrowest part of Grand Lake. It consists of two coves, one north of the other. Each offers excellent protection.

Cottages in the area called Wuhrs Beach line the southernmost cove (one boasts a possibly confusing ornamental lighthouse), but the cove has an inner pocket with deep water and absolute protection. The mouth of the pocket is spanned by almost invisible power lines, which must have been taken down regularly enough by masts to be raised from 25 feet of clearance to 54.

The entrance to the cove to the north is marked by prominent brown slag heaps from a now-defunct open-faced coal mining operation. The heaps sound like much more of an eyesore than they are. Inside is a totally unspoiled cove ringed by tall pines to the south and treed slopes to the north, with 10 to 12 feet of water and room for plenty of boats.

Approaches. Approach both inner harbors with care. The wires spanning the southern harbor run from a pole behind a brown cottage on the southern point to a pole by a white cottage on the northern point.

The chart shows a pair of red and green buoys at the mouth of the northern cove marking a pile of rocks jutting northward from the southern point. When we visited, the buoys weren't there, but we assumed the rocks still were. Make your entrance slowly, keeping off the southern point by about two thirds of the mouth's width, favoring the slag side to the north. Ten feet of depth is reported at the entrance, but it seems to be less, and it will vary with the height of the lake.

Things to Do. Row the dingy to the slag piles, where there is an old set of wooden steps on the bank. Climb the piles for a wonderful birds-eye view of the cove and out to Goat Island on the lake.
