DOUGLAS HARBOUR is the first harbor on the west shore, and Grand Lake doesn’t save the best for last. This is the center of boating activity on Grand Lake, yet Douglas Harbour remains remarkably low-key. Boats are quietly moored in the harbor and in the lovely arm to the east known as The Bedroom, but there is none of the bustle of a marina or a club. Most of these boats, in fact, belong to members of the Fredericton Yacht Club who leave them on Grand Lake for the season. The club even owns the wharf, which, like so many others on the river, is a concrete pier edged with wood at a branch of a rural crossroads. Dinghies are tied to nearby trees, and you are as likely see a tractor drive by as a car.

The arm of Douglas Harbour to the west would offer absolute protection in a snug cove ringed by trees were it not for the sandbar one foot beneath the surface across its mouth.

The beautiful eastern arm, though, squeezed between an island and Earles Meadows, is as cozy as a bedroom—just as its name implies. The first half is occupied by moored boats, but you might find anchoring room at its head.

Approaches. The entrance and channel into Douglas Harbour are well marked and buoyed. At the mouth, the red spar off Earles Meadows is shown only on the inset of chart 4142-4, but not on the chart itself.

The body of water to the west of the wharf, between the wharf and a sandy spit, has a charted depth of 10 feet. It is actually only 5 or less, but the bottom is soft. That, I’m embarrassed to say, is firsthand information.

Anchorages. Do not attempt to anchor to the west of the wharf. Instead, anchor among the moored boats between the last two red buoys to the east of the channel to the wharf. Or anchor at the head of The Bedroom, past the mooring field, favoring the Earles Meadows side. Holding ground is sand and mud.

For the Crew. From the wharf, take the road to the right to the local Irving station and Hunters One Stop convenience store for fuel (you’ll need to lug it), ice (cubes only), limited groceries, a takeout, a pay phone, and a small laundromat.
