BIG COVE is the largest feature of Washademoak Lake, lying midway down its length on the eastern shore. Like the name says, Big Cove is big—more than half a mile wide and a mile long, but it is shallow, giving way to marsh at its head beyond Birch Island. The shores are forested, with only a few cottages.

Good protection can be found in the bight behind Pine Island formed by The Bluff, although the tranquillity of the unspoiled shoreline is broken by a cottage there. During high waters, a single boat can work carefully in to the 8-foot spot off the eastern shore of The Bluff and anchor in a wilderness.

Approaches. Appleby Point can be recognized by its beautiful farm. Round the point and head to Barnes Point on the opposite shore of the cove. Favor that shore as you run into Big Cove, past Pine Island, before turning to the south and west. There may be fish traps off the Barnes Point shore, and deep-draft vessels should proceed slowly with an eye on the depthsounder. Depths throughout the navigable part of Big Cove are around 10 feet.
