THIS is one of the best harbors on the entire Saint John River. Kingston Creek lies to the east of high and steep Shampers Bluff near the mouth of Belleisle Bay.

Protection is almost complete, and the anchorage is convenient both to boats in Belleisle Bay and to boats bound up or down the Saint John River. There is room for numerous boats, yet it still feels snug. The shores are mostly undeveloped.

Approaches. The entrance couldn't be easier. Head south into the cove. Fish traps are sometimes staked off the eastern shore, just across from high Shampers Bluff, but otherwise there are no obstructions.

Kingston Creek is navigable for several miles, but the upper portion is notorious for deadheads, as indicated on the chart, and not recommended for boats with deep drafts.

Anchorages, Moorings. Anchor in the first bight to the west against the steep slopes of Shampers Bluff, before a fish trap off the west shore and before the first major narrowing of the creek. Youll find plenty of room, even if you find other boats. The water, however, is quite deep.

Things to Do. From the cockpit, watch for ospreys riding the thermals above Shampers Bluff. Take the dingy up the creek or around to a small beach on the northeast tip of Shampers Bluff.
