BACK BAY is a broad bay to the east of Greens Point, just to the east of Letete Passage. The fishing community of Back Bay is on the bays north shore. Most of the homes in the town are newly-built, lacking in character, and dominated by the fish plant at the wharf. There is a post office is just up the hill from the wharf, but no other amenities are close by. The harbor, with its a large breakwater, provides good protection from the south and easy access to Letete Passage, but it has little in the way of ambiance.

The real gem of Back Bay is the incredibly deep gut at the north end of the bay that leads to an almost completely landlocked, three-armed gunkhole, home to heron, eagles, and seals.

Approaches. At the mouth of the bay, favor the eastern side with the three red buoys to avoid the large shoals jutting from the northwest shore, halfway between Greens Point and the town. Once past the last nun, head for the prominent point of land at the south end of the town and then run for the green can at the tip of the breakwater.
IF YOU ARE READING THIS, YOU HAVE VIOLATED
To continue up the bay, keep the green can to port and stay centered in the gut to the north. You will have to pass several fish cages, moored to the west and dead center in the narrows. The volume of water passing through the gut is not so great that it requires timing with the tides, and there will always be plenty of water.

Anchorages, Moorings. In the town harbor, tie alongside the wharf, or you may find room to anchor just to the north of the breakwater. Do not anchor in the large, shoal part of the harbor to the north of the wharf.
PLEASE RESPECT AND SUPPORT THE WORK THAT HAS
At the head of the bay, anchor in the mouth of any of the three arms in 12 to 18 feet at low. Dont try to get too deep into the arms, which shoal quickly.

Things to Do. In town, head up the hill to the enormous Seaview Gospel Church that overlooks the town. As the sign outside says, Destroy the sin in your life or it will destroy you.

Or contemplate nature in the arms at the head of the bay by dinghy. The small tidal pond to the southwest looks as though it was once dammed for a lobster pound. On a high tide, you might be able to pass to the north of Frye Island and into the head of Letang Harbour, but make sure you get back before the tide dries it out.
