Tidal Range: Mean 18.7 feet; Spring 21.3 feet

DEEP COVE is on the west side of Moose Island, next to the Eastport airport. Fish pens are moored in the cove, and a long dock extends from near the big blue building of the Washington County Marine Trades Center, which offers nationally-renowned courses in commercial fisheries, marine mechanics, painting, and boatbuilding.

Approaches. Approach through the entrance to Cobscook Bay, where the current runs up to 4 or 5 knots. Favor the Shackford Head side of the channel to avoid Cooper Island Ledge. The entrance to Deep Cove is wide and unobstructed, except for a large flotilla of fish pens.

Anchorages, Moorings. Tie up near the end of the long dock, which has 12 feet at low along the outer face, or pick up one of the several rental moorings that Moose Island Marine maintains here. The cove is very exposed from northwest to southwest.

Getting Ashore. A float and ladder are on the south side of the dock.

For the Boat. Moose Island Marine (yard 207-853-9692; www.mooseislandmarine.com). This repair yard of Moose Island Marine can haul, store and repair most boats, and they have a shower. They operate the 60-ton boatlift for the State and the Marine Trades Center.

Washington County Marine Trades Center (207-853-2518). This facility is known locally as "the boat school." In addition to courses in all aspects of boat building, repair and maintenance, the school offers study in aquaculture. The marine center has a 60-ton boatlift for emergencies. You can also make below-waterline repairs by careening at the specially reinforced dock, letting the falling tide settle your keel on the granite ramp along the northern side of the dock.
