Harbor chart

Tidal Range: Mean 18.1 feet; Large 25.2 feet

THIS excellent and seldom-used refuge lies on the northwest side of Campobello Island, opposite Eastport. Early charts called it Harbour de L’Outre. Several man-made harbors have been built on either side of the entrance, and presumably the fishermen find these more convenient than the deeper indent past Man of War Head. For a cruising yacht, however, Harbour de Lute provides a serene and private anchorage.

Because of the many decaying weirs in the harbor, it is preferable to enter below midtide, when most of the stakes are visible.

Approaches. The entrance to Harbour de Lute, between Windmill Point and Man of War Head, is wide and open except for salmon pens on either side. Favor Man of War Head to stay clear of the 9-foot spot and head for green spar “UX1.” Two weirs extend from the western shore, one before the green spar and one beyond it. The second weir has lost its top poles and is not visible after halftide.
IF YOU ARE READING THIS, YOU HAVE VIOLATED
Leave the spar fairly close to port to clear the weirs and then make a wide turn to starboard toward Bunker Hill, favoring the eastern shore. There are several more weirs in the inner portion of the harbor. Continue to the 20-foot mark on the chart. A ledge west of this spot is visible except at very high tides.
INTERNATIONAL COPYRIGHT LAW.
Anchorages, Moorings. Anchor in midharbor, setting the hook in good mud 11 to 20 feet deep at low. There should be ample swinging room. Protection is good from every direction, although strong northerlies can funnel into the harbor.
PLEASE RESPECT AND SUPPORT THE WORK THAT HAS
After anchoring, pick out a range on the northeast shore that will take you clear of the weir on the western shore in case you want to leave at high tide.
Getting Ashore. Row in to the beach at a convenient spot on the eastern shore.

Things to Do. If you land at the meadow north of Bunker Hill, a brief struggle through the bushes will bring you to a dirt road shown on the chart. There are lots of wildflowers, and you may see a resident bald eagle.
