CAMPOBELLO is a large Canadian island that protects the entrances to Cobscook and Passamaquoddy Bay, joined to the mainland by the International Bridge over Lubec Narrows. It is a lovely island, 7.5 miles long and 2.5 miles wide, with hard-working fishing communities and the famous summer home of President Franklin D. Roosevelt on Friars Bay. His cottage has now become part of the Roosevelt-Campobello Island International Park (Canadian site) and can be reached by docking in the man-made harbor of Welshpool.

Campobello’s southern and eastern shores front on Grand Manan Channel. Head Harbour Passage runs along its northern and western shores, with depths of 200 and 300 feet. The island has two excellent natural harbors, Head Harbour at the northern end and Harbour de Lute on the western side, as well as several small man-made harbors that can provide refuge in a pinch.

A Canadian customs office is at the bridge to Campobello, but there is no place for a boat to dock, and Cananda has instituted a call-in system. Call 888-CANPASS to check in.
