IN the southwestern corner of Machias Bay, Howard Cove is easy to enter but exposed to south and southeast winds. Holding ground is poor, and there are no facilities.

Jasper Beach, at the head of the cove, is a half-mile crescent gravel beach, backed by a marsh, with a tidal inlet at the eastern end. The beach pebbles are a mixture of multicolored jasper quartz and smooth, dark, volcanic rhyolites. The town of Machiasport, with help from The Nature Conservancy, has preserved public access to this unique beach, which has been registered by the state as a Critical Area. To visit the beach, anchor off and row your dinghy in.
