THERE are no signs of civilization on the great southern beach of Roque—just the sweeping, mile-long arc of white-sand flanked by a meadow and framed by the dark spruces of fabled Roque Island.

Signs posted on the beach explain the owners’ wishes, and all visiting yachtsmen should respect them. In particular, avoid the southern end of Great Beach, which is reserved for the family, and refrain from walking inland beyond the beach.

Approaches. Great Beach is usually approached from the west through the Thorofare. From the east, the approach is wide and easy, north of Halifax Island into Roque Island Harbor. It is also possible, with care, to run through the slots between Halifax, Anguilla, Double Shot, and Great Spruce.
IF YOU ARE READING THIS, YOU HAVE VIOLATED
The only danger in Roque Island Harbor is Seal Ledge, visible for about two hours either side of low tide. Remnants of an old weir may still extend about 350 feet from the rocky point at the south end of the beach, but the weir is more of a nuisance than a real danger. The sketch chart will help you steer clear.
INTERNATIONAL COPYRIGHT LAW.
Anchorages, Moorings. Anchor anywhere along the beach in a comfortable depth. The best protection from prevailing winds is toward the southern end. The holding ground is fine, but a slight sea swell can make this a rolly anchorage, in which case you may be happier for the night somewhere else.
PLEASE RESPECT AND SUPPORT THE WORK THAT HAS
On most days in the summer, you will find six or eight boats anchored here. Occasionally a yacht club cruise will make it seem downright congested. In September, Great Beach returns to its natural state.
