LEDGE-SPANGLED Eastern Bay lies between Great Wass Island and Head Harbor Island. Strangers should attempt to navigate its northern portion only in good visibility and near low tide when most of the dangers are visible.

The usual approach to Eastern Bay is from the south, through the deep and clear passages of Mud Hole Channel or Main Channel Way. It is also possible, but considerably more difficult, to approach from the north from Moosabec Reach, through the winding buoyed passage just west of Head Harbor Island.

In addition to Mistake Island Harbor and the Mud Hole, Eastern Bay offers other anchorages to the adventurous sailor, including Sand Cove North on the east shore of Great Wass Island and the cove north of Middle Hardwood known as Sealand. In good years, naturalist Philip Conkling reports, Middle Hardwood has an enormous crop of blueberries and huckleberries. “The island looks like a sea of blue.”
