BIRCH HARBOR is mostly shoal, unmarked, and exposed to ocean swells. It would make an uncomfortable anchorage. Add to that a difficult entrance, where Roaring Bull breaks at low water.

The intrepid can enter along the southwestern shore. At the head of the harbor, a complex of stores includes a market, laundromat, liquor store, post office, and takeout.
