THE anchorage north of wooded Pond Island is a great gunkhole and provides access for the cruising boat to the beauties of Schoodic Peninsula, most of which is part of Acadia National Park. Although the cove is reasonably easy to enter, the bottom is rocky and there is some exposure to the ocean, so it is not recommended as an overnight anchorage.

Big Moose Island is easily identified at the end of Schoodic Peninsula by the high, green water tank. Wooded Pond Island lies close by to the north, and 440-foot-high Schoodic Head is prominent to the east. Enter north of Pond Island, favoring the northern side of the cove to avoid the ledges along the southern shore. The westernmost of these ledges is just visible at low tide.

Anchor beyond the ledges north of the eastern tip of Pond Island, in 11 to 16 feet at low. The bottom is rocky and the holding ground dubious. Consider leaving someone aboard while you explore.

Land near the causeway that crosses the head of the road, which will put you right next to the gravel road leading up to Schoodic Head. It is a half-hour hike to the top of Schoodic Head and well worth it. From the turnaround, you can look west across Frenchman Bay to Mount Desert Island, the lighthouse on Egg Rock, and your own boat riding at anchor below.
