Mount Desert region overview chart

ACADIA National Park is visited each year by five million people or more, several times the population of Maine, ranking it the second most popular national park in the whole country. Occupying large areas of Mount Desert Island, the park also includes parts of Schoodic Peninsula, Isle au Haut, and the Cranberry Islands.

Thanks to the efforts and foresight of some determined individuals, the 35,000 acres of the park cover the most spectacular scenery on the island and many would say on the whole Atlantic coast. The first rays of the morning sun to touch this country brighten the summit of Mount Cadillac. There are coastal drives, sheer cliffs, calm lakes for canoeists between wooded hills, natural springs, wild and formal gardens, and even a tea house at Jordan Pond. In addition to a museum of stone-age artifacts, there are natural walks, woods and wildlife, sea birds and ocean beaches, roads leading to the mountaintops, and 57 miles of carriage roads winding everywhere for hiker, bicyclist, horse-drawn carriage, and rider.

People come from everywhere to see this most beautiful of islands, this granite-hard, fog-softened, primeval meeting place of land and sea.
