Harbor chart

ROUND ISLAND is a Nature Conservancy preserve between McGlathery Island and Wreck Island to the west. The bight between Round and McGlathery makes a delightful anchorage. There are views past the island to Stonington and a glimpse southward of high Isle au Haut.

Coming from Merchant Row, identify the passage between Wreck Island and Round Island just north of Barter Island Ledges. There is a 5-foot spot southwest of Round Island, but otherwise its shores are steep-to. Keep the Round Island shore close aboard to starboard and follow it into the anchorage.

Anchorages, Moorings. Opposite the bump of land, anchor in mud halfway between Round Island and McGlathery in 10 feet at low. Protection is reasonably good, although a strong southwester will funnel through.

Things to Do. From the anchorage, you can land conveniently on the beach at McGlathery or on the beach on the eastern tip of Round Island to explore these preserves, both open to the public. Because Round Island is so heavily wooded, you probably will want to stick to the shoreline. No fires or camping are permitted.
