ORRS COVE is the most western of four fingers extending north from Quahog Bay, deep and well protected. Occasionally strong southerlies funnel up Quahog Bay and into Orrs Cove, but you can easily escape to the north of Snow Island.

Approaches. The cove is identifiable by the masts of boats moored off Great Island Boat Yard on the west bank. Midchannel is 8 feet deep at low and extends as far as the first boatyard dock to port.

Anchorages, Moorings. Great Island Boat Yard rents its vacant seasonal moorings or slips to transients, or you can anchor south of the boats. Holding is good, in mud.

For the Boat. Great Island Boat Yard (Ch. 09, 207-729-1639). The fuel dock here has gas, diesel, water, pump-outs, and ice, but it is only 4 feet deep alongside at low. Great Island Boat Yard hauls boats to 50 feet and can perform most repairs. A chandlery is ashore.

For the Crew. The yard has showers and a pay phone. There is no grocery store in Orrs Cove, but you probably can arrange a ride to the shopping centers of Cook’s Corner, only five miles away in Brunswick.
