LUNGING Island is a small, privately owned island with a house at one end and a small cove on the east side. The name is a corruption of the island’s original name of Londoners, reflecting its colonial use as a trading center for the London Company.

In 1974 the island was bought by oil-refinery interests as a site for an offshore terminal for unloading oil tankers and piping the oil to Portsmouth. Fortunately, the plan was defeated.
