ONE of the best and most attractive anchorages in the area is Merchant Harbor, on the north side of Merchant Island. Harbor Island, with beautiful, open meadows and conifers, protects the anchorage from the north and adds a sense of serenity and security. A private dock and float are at the head of the harbor, along with a few small craft on moorings.

Approaches. The approach is easy from east or west, following the marked channel of Merchant Row. As you enter, stay reasonably close to the Harbor Island side to avoid the 41&Mac218;2-foot spot shown on the chart.

Anchorages, moorings. In good weather anchor past Harbor Island toward the head of the harbor in 16 feet at low. If winds from the north are expected, anchor in the lee of Harbor Island in 27 feet at low. Protection is excellent from west to south. The bottom is mostly mud, but some of it may be rocky. Rig a tripline and be sure your hook is well set.

Things to do. State-owned Harbor Island has a pleasing combination of trees and raspberry thickets, open meadows and ledges.
