WHITE Island and Seaveys Island, six acres in total, form a lonely outpost where two Coast Guardsmen once ran the light. The lighthouse is now automated, but the keeper’s cottage is still there, and the state-owned islands are open to the public.

Choose calm weather to explore these islands. Pick up the white Coast Guard mooring at the north side and take your dinghy ashore near the boathouse. White Island is managed by a volunteer summer resident program, so check in with whomever you find. They will probably be glad to see you.

The history of White Island is filled with sagas of gales, shipwrecks, and dramatic rescues. In heavy gales, solid water has reached halfway up the light tower, and spray has cleared the top.
