Newbies to the Coast of Maine

I have just registered to this forum. My wife and I are planning on cruising the coast of Maine in 2011 or 2012 in our Columbia 35. We are not new to cruising. We have cruised all five Great Lakes, the North Channel and have completed the Great Loop in 2005-06, but we have never ventured along the US coast north of New York.
I really like what I have read so far about the coast of Maine. I appreciate the short sailing season (early June to Labor Day...not unlike our Canadian sailing season), rugged beauty, quaint villages, friendly folks, easy provisioning, etc, etc. I am less impressed with the discussions about fog, crab pots and congested cruising grounds. We are familiar with all three...fog on Lake Superior, crab pots in the Chesapeake and congestion in the North Channel of Lake Huron. We appreciate that there is some "price" to pay for the opportunity to cruise in some of the best cruising grounds in the world.
We are planning on getting the Cruising Guide to the Coast of Maine but, until then, I would like some unbiased assessment by locals or long time cruisers of what we can expect as newbies to the area. How prevalent is the fog? Are there more crab pots then in the Chesapeake (which I didn't think was too bad) and how congested are the preferred cruising areas during the prime cruising season of July and August? Thanks in advance to whomever takes the time to respond to our rookie inquiries.
