“Popham and Co. A Family Affair” will be presented by Douglas Rice who is currently completing a book on Popham, the first full-length biography of Sir John Popham and his extraordinary life. Join Mr. Rice as he lectures on the enigmatic Sir John Popham, the driving force behind the Popham colony. Sir John Popham was considered by some as a pillar of Queen Elizabeth's government, and a principal contributor to the peace of the realm. Others said he was covetous, corrupt and always involved his family in his projects. Sir John’s life and work provide a panorama of Elizabethan England at the time of Maine's first Settlement. This lecture will be sponsored jointly by Maine Maritime Museum and Maine's First Ship.
