New area of the site

I am currently developing the
Sea Kayaking area of the Maine Coast Guide site.
http://www.coastguides.com/kayak/kayak.html
I want to have a "Routes and destinations" area for each region of the coast, but I am wrestling conceptually with how to do this. I could describe actual trips (put in here, cross this body of water, go here, return this way, etc.) but I would like to avoid this method. It seems too prescribed and rigid.
Another possibility is to list the routes by put-ins or destinations. From "South Portland ramp", for instance would list various obvious destinations, their distances, cautions and highlights to be aware of on the way. Conversly, "To Jewell Island" would list all the obvious places to begin a trip to that destination, with similar information.
I'm leaning toward the latter method. Do you have opinions? Can anyone think of other options?
