A few comments about Glissando's comments.. Wed, 13 November 2002 12:02 Go to previous messageGo to previous message

First let me say that I sail out of Southwest Harbor on MDI. I am on the water from early May until Late October, so I see the lobster traps migrate in and then back out with the changing seasons. Now my comments.

First - How can you stay well away from working lobster boats? Just yesterday I was out for a sail. I tacked to keep my distance from a lobster boat that was hauling a trap. As soon as he finished with that trap he decided to switch strings that he was working and went to a trap a couple of hundred yards away that was also about 50 yards ahead of me on my new course. When I avoided him the first time, I was far enough away that I couldn't see his buoy pattern so I couldn't avoid his other traps. I ended up sailing about 50 feet from him. There was no way I could stay farther away. My point - It is often very hard to know where a lobster boat is going to go next.

Second - earlier this summer I was sailing between the Ducks (two islands south of the Cranberry Islands for those not familiar with the MDI area). Because of the combination of wind and current the toggles were overlapping. I had no choice but to run over them. Fortunately I have a full keel with attached rudder and the prop in an aperture, so I managed not to snag a warp. If the underbody on my boat had been different I would certainly have snagged at least one of the 10 or so toggles I had to run over.

Personally I have a big complaint about toggles. I know whay they are used, but I often see toggled floats in areas where most of the floats are not toggled. In my opinion there is no need for many of the toggles used around MDI. I say this because I often see them with the toggle float on the surface at high tide (and not being towed under by the waves). How can a toggle rigged that way keep the warp from fouling on the bottom (at low tide) any better than a single float?

To me lobster trap floats and pot warps detract from the enjoyment of sailing. They also mean that I don't night sail. Now I am not arguing that the lobstermen shouldn't be able to set their traps where they want, but I do think that 800 traps per fisherman is a bit much. Nuff said.
