I agree wholeheartedly with Tim's response.
One thing that tends to make it difficult to avoid them, however, is the inconsistant use of toggles as you move further downeast. Its hard to figure out which bouys have toggles, how long the toggle warp is etc etc.
But it just adds to the on-the-water experience. Avoiding pot bouys is one of the responsibilites that we take on (or should, anyway) when we go out on the water. Not really any different from avoiding other boats, floating hazards, or AToNs. Its just that there are more of them.
And one last thing that I'd like to say in defense of the lobster(wo)men... when push comes to shove, they are more likely than anyone else to go out of their way to help a boater in distress. I had this experience in Jericho Bay this summer. On a 25 knot day, at peak flood, with 4 foot chop, we snagged a pot between the keel and the rudder. There was so much force on the boat that I was unable to get ahold of the line to cut us free. A lobsterboat out of Stonington was kind enough to come along, survey the situation, and haul us back into the wind/waves/current so that I could grab ahold of the line. And don't think he wanted us to try to push the float down and out either. He told me in no uncertain terms to cut the line. A fine and considerate mariner!
