Last yacht in Bay of Fundy: SV Samphire Thu, 27 April 2006 12:14
To whom it may interest - I suppose !.
I once read an old copy of " Sail" magazine [ Feb 1998] while sailing back to New Zealand from Fiji.
In the letters section there was a letter titled,"the very last yacht in the bay of Fundy" [ why I don't know]
The letter was from Bob and Beth Lux [ SV Rhodora ] and spoke of their friends, ED and Luella Smith and their sailing vessel
" Samphire".
There's a picture of the Smith's boat tied up in a tidal river [ she's on the hard/mud ] but what got my attention was her twin "bipod / A frame [ or whatever people call it ] Rig !!.
I too live up a tidal river here in NZ and would dearly like to talk with the Smiths regarding their rig . I've tried over the years [ about 4-5 years] to look on line for any reference to either the smiths or their friends the Lux's but cant find them.
It occurred to me to start asking various marine places in and around the Bay of Fundy area, hoping that someone may recognize their name, but more likely their unusual double A framed rig & boat name " Samphire".
Perhaps their is a boat registry their ?, The name [ district ? ] "Longmarsh" was mentioned in the letter, and I thought it may be an area of the BOF !?.
If someone there could be kind enough to take the trouble to maybe forward this essay/letter to another, or whoever they feel may help, I'd be very grateful.
I intend building such a rig shortly and I'm sure the Smiths could save me a lot of research and or trouble if I could only talk with them .
Best regards
Pete Metcalfe.
