John Brotzman reports:

The info about the bar across Small Point Harbor needs to be updated. It's all on the west side now. I found it out the hard way, but got rescued by a local angel who guided me in with her kayak.

We came in to Small Point Harbor at dead low and slack water. There were no channel markers that we could see and we tried to use the cross over suggestion in the guide but found the bottom (nice, soft sand) instead. We draw 5 feet, too, and the channel averaged around six when we got into it, so there was little to give away. I believe that at this time, if you do intend to update that section, the channel is best on the eastern (port side going in) side. Of course, a phone call to one of the locals would be a good idea before you take my word for it.

After getting through the thinnest part, it came up to eight or nine feet for a ways but then toward the end of the anchorage started thinning out again. We dropped the hook in six feet and sat out the night happily next to the campground that covers the island on the western shore. There were beaucoup des campers and campfires and mosquitoes. Since we ere there to avoid a heavy blow, we thought the trade off was fine.

We went out for a row in the evening about 11 pm and there were two teenagers who appeared to be Chinese paddling a rowboat around with canoe paddles and trying to fish. They were having a hell of a time trying to get the boat to move and it was quite a sight to see. I got up for the sunrise and was watching a heron feed when these two went by again, still paddling their rowboat. They had managed to develop a better rhythm and were getting along much better but it was still pretty funny to see.
