Loose-leaf version of the guide? Wed, 20 February 2008 13:54 Go to previous message
Each time we are about to go to press, we explore lay-flat options for the Cruising Guide. I have strongly resisted spiral bindings, because I have personally had such poor luck with them. As soon as the spiral is kinked in any way, the pages fail to turn and soon tear along their perforations. Other lay-flat binding options are difficult due the weight of the book.

One option I am considering, however, is having a loose-leaf version of the Guide, with cover and pages drilled so it can be put into a reader-supplied three-ring binder or binders. This has the advantage of laying flat. Another advantage is that the whole guide can stay below, while relevant sections could be transfered to a smaller binder for use in the cockpit. The disadvantage is that the pages will be more prone to pulling out of the binder than they would be from a book binding. The book in a binder is bigger and more cumbersome than it is in bound form. And the loose-leaf version would also cost about $2 MORE than the softcover, since the books need to be bound as softcovers first, in order to drill them, and then the spine is cut off.

I keep remembering one sailor who tried running his Guide through his table saw in order to put it into a three-ring binder. Does anyone else think this a loose-leaf version is a good idea? Your thoughts and comments will help with this decision. Many thanks.
