I certainly agree with the Port Clyde comment. The fuel dock attendent there, instead of taking passed line to a cleat, took the line and pulled the starboard bow in to the dock just as the forward part of my boat crossed the wind break of the dock. That left my starboard side stern exposed to the wind just as I had slowed and the boat had lost steerageway. That hard pulling to the dock on my starboard bow, coupled with the gusting wind from the dock side on my starboard stern, in a short two seconds twisted the boat aspect from one of parallel to the pier to perpendicular to the pier and my stern was in the rocks some 40 feet off the dock before I could engage the engines to correct the situation.
I was very lucky. The numerous deep holes punched in my stern by the rocks came close but fortunately did not puncture the hull or I would have immediately sunk blocking the entire access to Port Clyde. It did take off my port trim tab, tipple the screws and loosen the shaft struts requiring hauling and costly repairs. The lesson learned here is not to trust the attendent to know what to do but to positively reinforce and explain to your crew what to do and to tell the attendent loudly in no uncertain terms what you expect him to do. In retrospect, I should have told him to ignore the bow line and to immediately secure the stern line or a spring line. I could easily have sprung in to the fuel dock on the stern, or a spring line, despite the gusting wind off the dock and avoided the entire embarrasing and costly event.
