O Boy! A message board just for what I need to know. I should introduce myself and say that I have been hacking around Casco Bay my whole life in a ten foot pram. As a babe, my Dad would take 7 of us, Mom, Dad, the kids and Grandma out for a row out to Basket, Little Chebeague, wherever, for a picnic. He must have had biceps the size of my thighs. Anyway, following the Brawn vs. Brain approach to cruising, I have taken to following ancient Indian canoe routes and my next trip takes me from the Penobscot River to my Great Great Grandfather's cellar hole (and my current cottage) on Cousin's Island in Casco Bay. In a canoe.

Anyway, my question is this: My BRAND NEW DeLorme Atlas shows primitive campsites on both Lower Goose Island and Little Whaleboat Island. Either of these would be a perfect camp after portaging from Clark Cove in Harpswell Sound over to Lookout Point boat ramp. My "Maine Coast Guide for Little Friggin Boats (C) 2000" by Curtis Rindlaub says "Do not Land".

So since I will be trying to cover the miles in a canoe, it will be a real hardship to arrive at a site at day's end only to find I can't camp. Via email or post, I'd love to hear anyone's experience.

I received the following notice of an opportunity from someone who, for now, would like to remain annonymous. If you have interest, please contact me, and I will relay it.

Curtis,

I am aware of an opportunity on an island, in Maine. I have tried for some years to get my friends and acquaintances interested, and maybe it's time to cast a wider net. (I have no financial interest.)

This island, with one house, is in need of a permanent "tenant" or "caretaker". The ownership situation is complex, and it is unlikely that the property will ever be available for purchase, but a long term lease might be possible. An occupant will have to deal with bureaucracies, historic and scenic restrictions, and some (minimal) public use of parts of the island.

While it may be possible to take possession without writing a large check, the property is in need of significant renovation and restoration - perhaps $1 Million, if contractors were hired; or several years of part-time work for a talented and resourceful do-it-yourselfer.

If you:
- Currently live in the New England area
- Earn (or reasonably expect) income enough to allow you to afford a second home
- Are willing to make a long-term commitment, to spend almost every weekend and vacation working on the island, with the possibility of penalties if you decide to back out
- Have significant experience in small boats
- Possess construction / trade skills, in effect capable of building a house, by yourself (or with your spouse/friends)
- Don't mind mosquitoes
- Are between 20 and 40 years old
- Have zero expectations of relaxing in a hammock, sipping Margaritas, or using a flush toilet!

Then I may be able to provide you with extensive information, contacts, advice, logistical and construction support.

Please contact me if you think this opportunity is for you. DON'T bother me unless you meet ALL of the qualifications I have listed (OK, maybe the age range is flexible, but you get the idea. )

Looking forward to hearing from the right person.

We don't do this very often but sometimes special friends or family make it worthwhile.Often we drag a propane tank and one of those big pot boilers. That makes short work of it.

Simple recipe: Corn, potatoes, hard shell lobsters and a nice island. We use fresh water as the corn and potatoes get too salty using sea water.

We have seen schooner crews do the same using onboard firewood and a quick hot fire.http://www.mainecoastguide.com/forum/index.php?t=getfile&id=63

One of the best kept secret overnights around. Fri, 18 March 2005 07:14 Go to previous messageGo to next message
When in my area of Penobscot Bay, Camden and Rockport Harbors are poor choices for anchoring overnight. Most boats make a beeline for Gilkey Harbor or Cradle Cove off Islesboro or Pulpit Harbor on North Haven for good protection, both are around 6 to 8 NM away.

There is a closer spot. The one caveat: you must be absolutely sure the wind will stay out of the south while you're anchored here. Well protected in southerly winds and good holding.

But talk about the sunsetting from Pulpit Harbor or the absolute scenic beauty of Penobscot Bay, this spot is hard to beat. Lasell Island. The anchorage on the northern end is less than 4 miles from Camden Harbor. A near sister anchorage exists just north of here off Lime Island.

Little mention of this in the guide, I hope Curtis keeps it that way but for the savvy few who hunt this board, there's plenty of room to anchor in this beautiful spot.

These photos were forwarded to me by Trump Bradley with the following message:

Coast Guard 47-ft Motor Life Boat 12/04/07 Morro Bay

Anybody for a boat ride ?? (Nothing on Snopes about this.)
------------------------------------------------------------ ------

Large storm swells reached Morro Bay California on December 4,
2007, bringing 15-20 foot swells with some plus sets. A U.S.
Coast Guard 47-foot Motor Life Boat was out for practice maneuvers

in the large surf, which is not unusual. However, a large wave
hit that was probably more than they bargained for...at least it's

the hardest I've ever seen them get hit. The air was filled with
mist, and they were quite distant, so at times were just a shadow
in the mist. I've adjusted them for better visibility, however the

quality of the photos is not the greatest due to the above
conditions, and futile attempts to keep the lens dry.

Curtis,

Thank you for putting your guide on the web. I've misplaced my 3rd edition and ordered your next edition (5th?) from landfall navigation. I've been sailing to Maine every other summer for the last twelve years, with your guide as my pathfinder. Since you have it on the web, I can continue to make detail plans for a trip this June to the Saint John River, including ordering the charts.
I've attached a photo I took at sunrise off the Isles of Shoals several years ago. If you like it, please feel free to use it on the web or in a book. Thanks again for your work on a valuable guide.

Yours very truly,

Moving up to a larger boat but it hurts to have to leave this creampuff behind! This 1985 has received TLC throughout its life, I'm the second owner. Recently repowered, there are only 130 hours on the 265 Mercruiser and outdrive. It sleeps 4, has an enclosed head, hot and cold pressurized water, shower, refrigerator with freezer, sinks in head and galley, alcohol/electric stove. Blue and gray carpets and cushions in the cabin, transom seating in cockpit. All in wonderful condition.

Theres a radar arch and Raytheon radar; Garmin gps, chartplotter and fishfinder. Ritchie compass, Sea Ranger VHF and Bennett trim tabs. Recent custom Sunbrella camper canvas so that the bow or arch over the cockpit folds down rather than sticking up like so many do. Continually upgraded throughout its life, the 11 gal. water heater is brand new this year as is the conduit to and from the MSD along with the Y-valve.

She's in the water and ready to go as I'm still using it. The buyer will get lines, PFDs, fenders, boat hook, flares and even videos on using the electronics for the $24,900 price.
