My apologies to everyone that discovered that our forum was in the twilight zone last week. Somehow our database got highly corrupted. We have managed to reserect a backup, but we lost the postings and registrations for the last month. Ah, the joys of computers!

Welcome back.

Last yacht in Bay of Fundy: SV Samphire Thu, 27 April 2006 12:14 Go to previous messageGo to next message
To whom it may interest - I suppose !.
I once read an old copy of " Sail" magazine [ Feb 1998] while sailing back to New Zealand from Fiji.
In the letters section there was a letter titled,"the very last yacht in the bay of Fundy" [ why I don't know]
The letter was from Bob and Beth Lux [ SV Rhodora ] and spoke of their friends, ED and Luella Smith and their sailing vessel
" Samphire".
There's a picture of the Smith's boat tied up in a tidal river [ she's on the hard/mud ] but what got my attention was her twin "bipod / A frame [ or whatever people call it ] Rig !!.
I too live up a tidal river here in NZ and would dearly like to talk with the Smiths regarding their rig . I've tried over the years [ about 4-5 years] to look on line for any reference to either the smiths or their friends the Lux's but cant find them.
It occurred to me to start asking various marine places in and around the Bay of Fundy area, hoping that someone may recognize their name, but more likely their unusual double A framed rig & boat name " Samphire".
Perhaps their is a boat registry their ?, The name [ district ? ] "Longmarsh" was mentioned in the letter, and I thought it may be an area of the BOF !?.
If someone there could be kind enough to take the trouble to maybe forward this essay/letter to another, or whoever they feel may help, I'd be very grateful.
I intend building such a rig shortly and I'm sure the Smiths could save me a lot of research and or trouble if I could only talk with them .
Best regards
Pete Metcalfe.

What am I missing? I passed through there a couple days ago and found NO room to anchor (unless I were to go in the fairway). For sure, there wasn't room behind Harbor Island. It's all mooring buoys as near as I can tell.

Hello,
I am trying to get info on the Catherine B. Hannah Landing, which is near Pemaquid Beach & I believe is part of the Bristol Parks. If you have any info you can pass on to me about this, it would be greatly appreciated.

Why is it that this chart is the only US Chart that is in meters? Why can't the chart be converted back in to feet?

I wrapped up my season with the Halloween Gale. Sat, 04 November 2006 13:02 Go to previous messageGo to next message
Halloween was the day after it left our area of Penobscot Bay. I spent three days dodging the wind and seas in Gilkey Harbor. It was both a beautiful and nasty gale depending on which side of the glass you were on.http://www.mainecoastguide.com/forum/index.php?t=getfile&id=169

Crossing Fundy Tue, 06 February 2007 19:56 Go to previous messageGo to next message
Looking for some local information on crossing the Bay of Fundy in a small power boat sometime in June. 20mph cruise. Is it possible to cross from Eastport to Digby or is it better to go from Saint John to Digby?

Thanks
Roger

Perrys Creek. Mon, 03 September 2007 20:05 Go to previous messageGo to next message
We finally made our way there this season over Labor Day weekend. I've heard from more than one person, there seemed to be more boats on the coast of Maine this year. I saw perhaps a dozen boats anchored in outer Perrys Creek. I'm told some of the traffic may have been due to large cruising groups.

We borrowed a hurricane mooring for the night in the creek.

It certainly is still one of our favorites close to home. The hiking is wonderful and the creek is more of an inland lake at high tide. At low, it get's very narrow. Anyone else see more boats on the coast of Maine this season?

Hi to All Mariners,
I recently heard of a proposal to the USCG requesting the DELETION of the Sound Signal at Whithead Island Light, Muscle Ridge Sound, Penobscot Bay, ME. The USCG is requesting that all interested parties contact Jack.J.McLaughlin@uscg.mil with their thoughts and opinions on this matter. You can also find contact info on the USCG Local Notice to Mariners website (you have to scroll down many pages to find). My family owns property on Whitehead Island and I believe that the sound signal is a critical aid to navigation for mariners cruising Muscle Ridge Sound due to the fequency of foggy conditions in this area. If you agree, please take the time to express your opinions to Mr. McLaughlin and help keep beautiful Penobscot Bay safe for all mariners.
Sincerely,
W.Gamage
ps. deadline is Sept.7th.

Easy In, easy out fuel docks Tue, 18 September 2007 11:29 Go to previous messageGo to next message
The post relating to the docking problems at the fuel dock in Port Clyde prompted this thread. Having a full keel, manuverability is allways an issue in tight quarters. Here are three easy in and out fuel docks that come to mind quickly.

1. Boothbay Harbor / Carousel Marina - Nice long dock, easy approach from either north or south. Deep water all around.

2. Rockland / Landings Marina - Fairly long dock, eazy approach from north or south. Deep water. A little exposed in strong winds from the east.

3. Northeast Harbor / Clifton Dock on the west side of the approach to the inner harbor. - Not a large dock but not usually real busy. I think it shallows out quickly if you are moving south paralel to the dock going south. You just need to turn toward the channel soon after leaving the dock. The easiest approach is probably from the north but not a real problem from the south either.

Anybody have any others?

Moorings at Damariscove Island Tue, 16 September 2008 13:46 Go to previous messageGo to next message
Westbrook Murphy writes:

Damariscove (p. 134 - 135): The two moorings the Land Trust maintains for guests have differing depths at low. The first, just off the stone pier, has 6 feet. The second, a little further up the harbor, is good only to 4 feet. This information was provided to me during an August visit by Nick and Tracey Euler, who have been the island's summer caretakers for number of years.

The 2 moorings indicated in the guide are not in for 2009. Across the way at Tom's, there are 2 moorings. Though, I was told today, 2nd hand, from one of the caretakers, the moorings are a mere 700lbs from scrap metal. Too bad the island moorings are gone.

This was posted on our prior forum, and it is dated, but after issues about the inadequacies of the vector charts for Whitehead Passage, I'm posting this again as a reminder to be extra vigilant in close quarters with the shore. Nice job, Ben.

Mooring or dockage for 2 weeks starting May 25th Tue, 27 March 2012 14:38 Go to previous message
Hello All,

I'm new to this forum. I thought I would jump right in with a request. I bought a wonderful old Islander 34 in November of last year and am presently getting her ready for the water. I'm not from here so I don't know where all the marinas and mooring fields are. The boat will be splashed on May 24th in South Portland. I need a place to put her for about 2 weeks till I do a few shake down sails and provision her for a trip south. If anyone can help with information I would greatly appreciate it.

Warm regards to all,

Neil
