Wolfe's Neck (Harraseeket River)

I found this chapter of Multitudes: The Unauthorized Memoirs of Sam Smith enjoyable reading. I recommend it to anyone who has spent a night on a mooring in the Harraseeket river listening to the cows moo on Wolfe's Neck. Smith's family owned the land that later became the Wolfe's Neck State Park and the experimental cattle farm, and they summered there in the 1930s-1960s.

We will be beginning the Corinthians Cruise on August 7th at Sebasco Estates. We are seeking "Local Knowledge" about marinas to leave our boat at for a week, or perhaps a mooring. Slow Poke is a GB 46. Also interested in information about car rentals and getting to and from the airport.

Wotton's Wharf, Boothbay Harbor

Wotton's Wharf was purchased this winter by Boothbay Region Boatyard to establish deep-water berthing within walking distance to downtown Boothbay Harbor.
The wharf has 580 feet of dockage with 17' of depth at mean low water and a fuel dock with gas and diesel. Plans include a marina office, ship store, and repair shop as a satellite of BRBY. The operation hopes to appeal to larger yachts, up to 350 loa and 16' draft, cruising downeast.

Wendameen ashore in Portland Harbor

Schooner Wendameen breaks off mooring at Portland Yacht Services in 50+ knot winds on Monday night. Photo and description forwarded by Kathy McInerny:
I just sent these to the owner - Portland Schooner, i.e. Scott Reichman, who already owns Bagheera, had just bought Wendameen, a well known and lovely 65-ish foot Alden. Bagheera had been at the docks, and Wenda. was on a mooring, down by Phin's.
This is what I saw on my morning walk (the pic's of Bag show how the crucial line between the two masts snapped; you should have seen the main mast bouncing to and fro just like a piece of rubber until someone tied a few lines to it. Unreal.
As for Wendameen, I was moved almost to tears, standing there and hearing her be pulled and yanked and grinding. I imagine they will have to pull her - lord knows some seams have probably been rearranged. I sent these to Scott thinking he might be able to use them for insurance.
I don't know what the heck they're going to do - it's blowing like crazy, suppose to keep blowing, and the Wenda's cables are wrapped around the pilings, etc. What a sad mess.

Bucks Harbor Parking/BHYC Phone #

A two part question:
Anyone know of a good option for a week to 10 days parking in the Bucks Harbor area? My wife and son are meeting me there for a bit of cruising.
Part two:
Anyone have a working phone number for the Bucks Harbor Yacht Club? The one I snagged from the web?326-9265 is "out of service." But my Cruising Guide is, of course, on the boat, so I don't know if there's a different one listed.
Thanks!

Trump Bradley, aboard Wydendown, writes:
Curtis,
Just got to Burnt Coat harbor on Swans Is. The bell outside the entrance is gone - another casualty of the GC budget cuts.
He also said a whistle buoy has been pulled, but I'm not sure which one.
Kevin Staples says they are trying to get them replaced as there have been lots of complaints.
Did I mention that the disposal-area buoy, north of the PB buoy in West Penobscot Bay, has also been removed.
Monday, July 7th, we were chased out of Lunt's landing - no moorings available as they had all been reserved by some yacht club. Was advised to call ahead in the future. Headed for Cranberry Harbor and picked up the "City Guest" mooring. Heard a severe T-storm alert on the VHF and the winds hit - up to 35Kt. Then I realized that we were dragging the mooring so put my hook in and dropped the mooring which continued south. I suspect it had not been inspected for a while and the thimble broke and all that was holding us was the bottom chain.
Your warning about kelp is appropriate. When the storm was over, another boat decided where they were anchored was too exposed (it was a bit bouncy) and moved over to the edge of the mooring field. They made several attempts but kept bringing up kelp on their anchor. Eventually they moved back to about where they were originally. Judging from the sound our chain made as the boat moved, there wasn't much, if any, kelp where we dropped the hook - approximately at the 20-ft mark near the "O" of Harbor on chart 13321. Sounded more like gravel or small rocks. I'll know more when I haul anchor.
There must be some goofy currents in Cranberry Harbor - at times boats face every which way.
Got to Somesville harbor - can "9" is gone. Word from a local that it's been gone for quite a while. Harbor is full of moorings which, it appears, are often picked up as "lunch hooks". Tried anchoring, but the mud is soft and doesn't hold well. Because we wanted to spend the day ashore in Acadia, I asked a local who pointed me to someone's storm mooring - she keeps her boat elsewhere.
Finally made it to Hinckley and their wireless internet.
Sitting in Seal Bay, Vinalhaven. Spotted an eagle on top of a dead tree.
Noticed that the stake everyone uses to keep off the rocks when going deep into the bay was gone. I dinghyed over to a man (local) and was told that the caretaker who put it in each spring had died last year. The owner of the property that removed and replaced it is a lobsterman and hasn't gotten around to put the stake back in.
Perhaps your revision should indicate that the stake may or may not be in place.
Next day: Took a dinghy ride to the inner harbor and, lo & behold, the stake w/ a green flag was in place. The man I talked to must have arranged to have it replaced.
Cheers, Trump

They have moorings, a launch, and listen in on channel 9. Dig out your best "casual" duds, and your gold card (about $40-$50pp with wine etc). They really want cruiser business. You could also ask about golfing while sitting on their mooring. I think they'd agree if you promised to eat dinner too. The location is unbeatable; with wonderful sunsets over the mooring field, marred only a little by the power plant stack across the sound on Cousins Island. The food is top notch, and usually harvested locally. See the website for details.
The Chebeague Island Stone Pier is on the "inside" (north coast) of Great Chebeague, near the east end of the island. You can also park on the rte 1 parking lot in Yarmouth and take the bus and ferry from Cousins Island. Be sure to check their schedule.
For a less pricey meal, Calder's Clam Shack just opened on the North Road of Chebeague. It's about 2 miles from the stone pier (from the pier, turn right onto South Road, then bear right at the fork onto North Road where the Chebeague Historical society is - an old schoolhouse, and look for the shack on the left side about a mile further on, just after going by Firehouse Road, see http://www.chebeague.org/chebroadmapfull.jpg). They have sandwiches, fried clams and scallops, burgers, excellent onion rings, lobster roll on weekends, and a friendly smile. Clams are expensive this year (in my opinion) because the wholesale market is so tight - about $12-$13 for a pint. The Clam Shack is closed Mondays. If you are brave, you can ask anyone with a car to give you a ride over, they are (almost) all friendly to visitors who are polite and friendly in return.
You can find out a lot obout Chebeague at http://www.chebeague.org
Note: I have no affiliation with the Inn, but the Calders are my cousins.

From Trump Bradley:
Great sail from Frenchboro to Winter Harbor, but as I approached Baker Island I noticed the R"8BI" whistle just south-east of the point has been removed.
I checked out the former old marina in Henry Cove that had fallen into disrepair. I had heard someone had bought it and fixed it up. It now looks like a thriving facility for the local lobstermen. And Inner Winter Harbor is packed with moored lobster boats.
The "guest" mooring for the yacht club is now $25. Used it since I've had trouble in the past with anchors holding here.

The Cruising Guide, p. 122, mentions that from Harmon Harbor, on the Sheepscot, you can land on the peninsula to the east and find the road that leads to Five Island. This may no longer be the case. We discovered this summer that the southern end of that road is private and gated.
Albert Presgraves also reports the following:
In Harmon Harbor, the southern end of the eastern peninsula now has (at least) three new cottages; (big summer houses) where you mention there is a road that runs north to Five Islands. We tied our dinghy to their float, but it didn't feel right walking through their yards to find the road. We moved around to some rocks further north, and walked across the peninsula to the road; it is a lovely walk up to Five Islands, but the southern end of the peninsula (with the houses) was posted as private.
