Long Cove's inner sanctum Thu, 19 August 2010 12:32 Go to next message
Hello Curtis,
Attached are four photos of the entrance to the Inner Sanctum at the
head of Long Cove. The first two are facing into the Sanctum, the
second two facing out. Being an impetuous sort I attempted to take our
6ft draft boat in the prior afternoon at 4/5 high tide. No dice. Of
course I was barefully moving so no damage done other than crushing a
few mussels and barnicles.

So while this Inner Sanctum may be theoretically possible to access it
would only be for shoal draft vessels or for those who are willing to
thread a slot of only ten to fifteen feet wide, 25 ft or so from the
eastern shore.

Hope this is useful.
Fairwinds,

Jonathan Caldwell

Hi Jonathan,

Fantastic info! Thank you. I've never dared to nose my way into the inner sanctum, and I'm guessing that neither did Hank Taft! The problem of course is that the high tide required to get in leaves no margin for error if you should go aground.

It sounds like you might want to try Seal Trap on Isle au Haut's west side. It's not in the guide, and it is not for the faint of heart.

Thanks again.

Curtis
