Mooring advice around Ellsworth Fri, 29 September 2006 11:55 Go to next message
We've recently moved to Ellsworth, along the Union River where it opens into the bay. I'll bring our small cruising boat up here from Boston in the spring, and I'm looking for a place to moor it permanently.

I'd love to hear some local advice and opinions.

So far I'm considering the Lamoine State Park, and the Carrying Place Beach mooring field in Surry. Lamoine has a bit of a waiting list, and I'm not sure how fast I'll move through it. Surry is closer to us, and I wouldn't mind exploring the west side of MDI for a while anyways. The problem is I don't know where to go for information on dropping a mooring at that beach. Does anyone have advice or experience? Recommendations of a good mooring service for dropping my new tackle? Other ideas of where to put a mooring?

Thanks, Nate

An anonymous user posted the following to a report that I only just now noticed:

The Ellsworth Harbor is an easy place to get in to and out of. And the trip from the harbor to the open sea is very nice. You may be told there is a waiting list for a mooring in the habor, however I think you stand a reasonable chance to pick up a mooring.

Thanks,

I may check it out depending on how things go at Carrying Place in Surry.

We live on the Union River where it opens into Union River Bay (2 mi. south of Ellsworth Harbor) and enjoy exploring that area by kayak. At 5 knots with an outboard running though, I'd prefer to not make the 5 mile trip down the river, and through the shoal parts of the bay before setting sail near Patton Bay.

That will be a good back-up plan if Surry doesn't work though.

Thanks,
Nate

The Union River is one of those places where what you gain in protection you pay for in distance!
