Who doesn't love Pulpit Harbor? Fri, 25 February 2005 15:14 Go to next message
It's nearly a cliche' for sailors passing through Penobscot Bay. But we never tire of spending a night in the placid waters inside.

Despite it being one of if not the most popular anchorage for miles in either direction, we have never had a problem finding room to anchor here even coming in at night.

In the off season we will often "borrow" a mooring as someone will be on the boat at all times and few are being used except in season.

In season, we prefer to anchor away from the moorings. The view of the sunset is nicer and it's alittle more private. Holding is good, protection superb and a schooner or two is likely to be nearby in the outer anchorage.

Shore access is easy at the public landing beach area by the bridge or all the way in at another public dock.

This photo is early morning in Pulpit.

Me!

But, I suppose that's becuase I haven't been there yet. Last summer we had planned to head there from Pickering Island but had to abort due to pretty stupid winds right on the teeth. You can read about that day here: http://www.dasein668.com/sail/2004/cruise04/31july04.shtml.

Hopefully we will get there during this summer's cruise!

Great site Nathan. I have been enjoying your log and projects, nice work! Anchoring outside of the moorings gives the best view of the sunset. Here's a photo our son inspired enough to do a little sketching.

Don't forget Cabot Cove. Wed, 23 March 2005 10:43 Go to previous messageGo to next message
.

If you don't require a sunset but are looking for a little solitude Cabot Cove is usually a little quieter than the main harbor.

When entering Pulpit Harbor, if you look into the first cove to the right, it looks as though it's full of moorings but because the dock is at the entrance, so are the moorings. There is quite a bit of room and depth beyond the moorings about as far as the ledge of rock which is covered at high tide.

Here I am achored right next to the ledge. I like to leave as much room for others as I can by anchoring in the shallowest water possible. Depths lessen to around 3 or 4 feet at low as you approach the ledge.

Cabot Cove is surrounded by woods and has a nice beach to explore with trails leading to a trail along the ridge which will take you to the road or to Pulpit Rock.
