I'm thinking about kayaking out around Ragged Island this weekend. I've never been out there before. It's a little mysterious.

Do you have any information available on your website about Ragged Island in Casco Bay?

I own your Maine Coast Guide for Small Boats: Casco Bay book, but don't have it with me at work.

Anything you can send me would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
David

Hi David,

Sorry I haven't posted anything on Ragged yet. What I know off the top of my head is that it is private, with a cottage on the south (oceanside) shore. The steep rocky north shore forms a broad anchorage when the wind is out of the southwest. I understand landing is tolerated (I don't have this in my book), but I have only explored part of the north shore myself. I don't think you will find anyone out there this early anyway.

A few words of caution, though. Ragged is out there. It is exposed, and the current/wind combination can be fierce when the tide is running or the wind is blowing, or both. There aren't may other boats out yet, and that water is still just about as cold as it was in February. Plan carefully and have a safe trip.

Let me know what you find out...
