The Loss of the Portland and After the Storm Events
Author John Rousmaniere will give an exciting illustrated talk about the violence of the sea and the hopes and choices that put sailors in harm's way. This lecture will focus on two tragic disasters at sea - the loss of the steamship Portland in 1898 (called New England's "Titanic") in which 192 souls were lost. The second describes the 1935 tragedy that occurred aboard the ketch Hamrah, during a race from Newport, Rhode Island to Norway, an event that destroyed a prominent Boston family.
