Length of the Maine Coast?

Good afternoon:
We would appreciate any help that you can give us in regards to the exact mileage of the Maine Coast. In your book "A Cruising Guide to the Maine Coast", third edition, you say on page xii, that the length of the Maine Coast has changed from 3,500 to 5,500 miles due to the help of satellites.
The Maine State Library has the mileage at 3,478 miles and close to 5,500 KM for data on record. Where did the mileage come from that you quote in your book? Could you have used the KM for miles in error?
Dann Lewis, Director of the Maine Office of Tourism, took the new figure of 5,500 miles for the Maine Coast, to use in all of our information given to out to the public, as well as in brochures and on our website. We would be happy if the 5,500 is correct and that there is someway to verify this information. It would be hard to admit that the Maine Office of Tourism is giving out incorrect information about our state. Mr. Lewis would be disappointed as to the accuracy of the information in your book as well.
