SUPPLIES AND SERVICES




THE supplies and services that you are used to elsewhere are available on the coast of Maine, only stretched a little thinner. Marinas become scarcer as you sail farther east and almost nonexistent beyond Mount Desert. There you will be dependent on the facilities that service fishermen—not as convenient, but a lot more interesting. In fact, this adds a great deal of flavor to cruising Down East.

 Fuel. Gas and diesel can be found everywhere along the Maine coast.Fuel docks serving recreational boaters are easy to find anywhere west of Mount Desert Island. East of Schoodic Peninsula, they are few and far between. The majority of fuel docks are small operations serving their local fishing fleets. This guide indicates whether they are willing to interrupt their regular business to serve cruising boats. Know your boat's fuel consumption and plan ahead.

Water. Good water in reasonable quantities is generally available all along the coast. In certain places dependent on wells, the supply is limited.
Ice. Most marinas and many markets have freezers with cubed or block ice. Way Down East you may have to go to a fish plant or a lobstermen’s co-op to get chipped ice.

Propane and CNG. Propane is available in the larger harbors. In smaller harbors you may be able to get refills or exchange cylinders at shops that cater to trailers and mobile homes. Often hardware stores are also refill stations. CNG can be found in a few places, but in Maine, it is still rare.

Repairs. Hull and engine repairs can be made in boatyards all along the coast, most of them described in this book. Additional help can be found inland. Farther east, as the number of marinas and boatyards dwindles, you will become more dependent on your own resources. Remember that lobstermen and fishermen do all their own work on their boats, and most of them are good mechanics.
