PLEASE NOTE: In an attempt to simplify the always tedious task of updating charts, I am grouping chart corrections together instead of interspersing among their nearest entries. Chart changes below may not be comprehensive. Remember to make all chart corrections directly from Notice to Mariners issued by the US Coast Guard. To subscribe to Notice to Mariners, call 1-800-848-3942, ext. 8335.

INTRODUCTION

SOUTHERN COAST
Isles of Shoals, p. 30-32
Gosport Harbor. See Pepperrell Cove, below.

Back Channel (Kittery), 3637
Approaches, p. 36, chart, p. 35. Michael Manford reports the following changes: What we show and describe as nun "8" at the eastern end of the Back Channel is now nun "4." He also adds the following caution: "As well as pointing out that six-foot spot in the middle of Back Channel, on the way in there is a three-foot spot (yikes) that is on a direct bearing between N "6" and Daybeacon "2", which is way inshore (i.e. to starboard) of that spot. The text suggests 'steering towards Spruce Creek.' If you do that too soon, it will take you over the three-foot spot. It's safer to go mid channel then turn well after Daybeacon "2". Even the direct route between N "4" and C "3" takes you a tad close to that three-foot spot, which just happens to be six feet less than my Oyster draws!"

Pepperrell Cove, p. 35-36
Bruce Thomas, the last commodore of the now-defunct Pepperrell Cove Yacht Club (PCYC), writes with more details on the moorings in Pepperrell Cove and Gosport Harbor on the Isles of Shoals: "Pepperrell Cove Yacht Club closed in 1997. The moorings were taken over by Portsmouth Yacht Club and are still available for transient boaters. The moorings in Pepperrell Cove are located in a line below Fort McLeary and are marked with blue floats. The Portsmouth Yacht Club launch transports mooring customers across the Piscataqua River to use the club house on New Castle Island. The moorings in Pepperrell Cove as well as in Gosport Harbor are marked PCYC-PYC."

CASCO BAY
Peaks Island. p. 69
For the boat. The telephone number for Jones' Landing Marina is no longer in service. The primary phone number for the Peaks Island Marina is now 766-5783, but you can use 766-2508 as a backup.

Royal River, p. 77-78
For the boat. Yarmouth Boat Yard (p. 78) no longer pumps gas, and despite being on every pump-out list published, they won't take any of your you-know-what. All fluids in or out can be handled at Royal River Boat Yard, just downriver.

For the crew. Harbor Books, with their wonderful selection of marine titles has moved uptown, out of Lower Falls Landing, to US Rt. 1.

MIDCOAST
Boothbay Harbor, p. 133-135
Things to do, p. 135. Notices to Maine Cruisers #4 reported that the aquarium in Boothbay harbor had closed, but we failed to be specific about which aquarium it was. The aquarium that closed was the commercial aquarium on the east side of the harbor, just north of the lobsterman's coop, not the aquarium run by the Department of Marine Resources on McKown Point. Thanks to Louis Orlando for clearing this up.

Monhegan, p. 164
For the crew, p. 166. Don't count on the Mohegan Store for groceries--or even ice cream! There is a long, slow winter between the busy summer seasons on Monhegan and an equally harse economic climate, and, alas, the store has closed. If you miss it enough, though, it is for rent, and you can run it yourself.

PENOBSCOT BAY
Bucksport (Penobscot River), 244245
Mickey Chasse writes that Mercers store (p. 245) is no more, and that Jed Proudy's Tavern (p. 244), once one of the oldest inns in the country, is now a home for senior citizens.

Holbrook Island Harbor (Cape Rosier), 251
Trump Bradley reports that the moorings to the east of Ram Island look like they haven't been attended to recently. This is not surprising. I have heard that there has been a recent death in the family of Kenny Eaton. Our sympathies go out to Ken, along with our thanks for so many years of the use of these moorings.

MOUNT DESERT
Southeast Harbor (Deer isle), p. 280
Dan Levine writes "That 'rk rpt' in Southeast Harbor on Deer Island is htere. We didn't hit it, but anchored nearby and saw it emerge as the tide whnt down." Circle it on chart 13313.

Burnt Coat Harbor, p. 288-289
Trump Bradley gives us our latest report on Burnt Coat Harbor. The Swan's Island Boathouse is still for sale, but the Staples may run a take-out operation there this summer. Moorings are still available for rent, though the fee is up to $20.

Frenchboro (Long Island), p. 289-291
There is great news on Frenchboro. Last year, a 900 acre tract of undeveloped land--more than half the island--was put on the market by owner Peggy Dulany, virtually guaranteeing immediate major social and economic changes for this small island fishing community of 45. The Maine Coast Heritage Trust, the Island Institute, and the Maine Sea Coast Mission coordinated an emergency fundraising effort, and individual and corporate donors did the rest, raising $3 million to buy the land for conservation, the most money ever raised for a single Maine conservation effort. On behalf of all the cruisers who visit Frenchboro to revel in Long Island's breathtaking landscape and pace of life, we thank you, and we encourage cruisers to wholeheartedly support the efforts of these organizations.

Great Cranberry Island, p. 313-314
Great Cranberry, like all island communities, is an island in transition, slowly evolving from away from a self-supporting community, to one more interconnected--and interdependent--on the rest of the world. An easy measure of the change are island schools. Great Cranberry supports a school, but beginning this fall there will be no more children to attend it.

Little Cranberry Island (Islesford), p. 314-315
If we haven't reported it already, thge correct number ofr the Islesford Dock Restaurant is 244-7494, not 244-7454.

DOWN EAST
Jonesport, p. 344
Another boat has been idientifed! Jerry Nisenson writes to tell us that he belongs to Tristan, the 26' cutter shown moored against a floating lobster dock in Jonesport Harbor.
